Case Study: Water Over Nickel
For the Water Over Nickel campaign, 515 Productions collaborated with Beehive Strategic Communication to create two short films to help build public awareness around the threat of a proposed nickel mine and the importance of protecting clean water. One film followed the fall manoomin harvest and went on to win a Regional Emmy Award. The second focused on the spring tradition of tapping maple trees. Both films centered the cultural traditions of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, showing why these practices matter and what is at stake if clean water is put at risk.
The campaign was designed not only as long-form storytelling, but as a flexible public affairs content engine. In addition to the two short films, we created more than a dozen pieces of short-form content for social media and paid ads, extending the campaign’s reach across platforms and audiences. Both films were also screened at film festivals across the region, helping the work reach new viewers and deepen public engagement. Because the success of the campaign depends on public support and outreach, the strategy was built to connect emotionally, travel widely, and keep the message in motion.
